Unlike most non-tropical destinations, however, the weather in Santa Teresa is warm every month. During the day, average temperatures rarely fluctuate outside of 85°F to 95°F.
The thing to watch out for is rainfall. In the driest part of the year, which runs from February to March, there can sometimes be less than a single day of measurable rain. September and October are the wettest months, and during this time, you can expect around 15 inches of rain or more.
So when you’re looking at the weather in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, it’s best to look by month.
Costa Rica’s Dry Season
The dry season in Santa Teresa usually runs from December to April. You’ll get the best beach conditions during these months, and it’s a lot easier to take day trips.
The weather in Santa Teresa is generally sunnier and more predictable, and with less heavy rain, the roads are more navigable. It’s a great time to learn how to surf, since there are fewer big swells.
Of course, there are trade-offs to traveling during peak season. Demand is much higher, particularly around the holidays and school breaks, and if you’re not a fan of the heat, some days can be quite overwhelming.
Costa Rica’s Wet Season
The rainy season in Santa Teresa typically starts in May and runs through November. Many people call this the “green season.” The hills and trees are green and verdant, and if you don’t mind wearing a poncho every now and then, you’ll get to enjoy some stunning hiking experiences.
The weather in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, during these months still leaves room for activities. You can surf, spend time on the beach, do yoga, try out restaurants in town, and enjoy days at Casa Teresa Grande.

January and February
The first two months of the year are two of the driest and most reliable months to visit. The weather here in Santa Teresa is typically sunny, warm, and best suited for long days at the beach, outdoor dining, surfing, and day trips. Demand can be relatively high, so we recommend planning activities and excursions early.
March and April
It’s still dry in March and April; the only major difference is that because it has now been dry for a few months, there’s less lush vegetation. With that said, it’s still a great time for pool sessions and sunset dinners. There’s a slight hint of seasonal change with intermittent rain as you near the end of April, but not much compared to the wet season.
May and June
There’s a bigger change in the weather in May. This month marks the beginning of the wet season, so there’s a bit of rain, but typically only in the afternoons or evenings.
As you get further into June, beaches are a lot less crowded because of the rain. For avid surfers, however, weather permitting, it’s prime season. Just note, for safety reasons, that you might be limited in terms of other water activities or hiking trips.
July and Early August
July weather in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, provides a slight drop in rain from June, and it’s one of the best months for wildlife viewing. Throughout the lush forests, you’ll see everything from resident birds to howler monkeys out and about. Locals refer to it as “veranillo,” Spanish for “little summer.”
Late August, September, and October
This is typically the wettest stretch of the year. It’s a great time to see the local rainforests at their most lush, and the waterfalls are roaring. By September, there’s a chance it can rain every day, so you’ll experience higher humidity and a lot of overcast skies.
Do note that Costa Rican Independence Day is on September 15th, so even though there’s quite a bit of rain, it’s a wonderful cultural experience to be part of.
Rainfall doesn’t peak until October. It isn’t unusual to see five inches of rain per day. The beauty of this period is the empty beaches and big swells.
November and December
November is a transition month, slowly moving back into the dry season. The weather can still be slightly unpredictable, which keeps the crowds away, so if you’re able to be more flexible with your plans, you and your group can enjoy a lot of the best that Santa Teresa has to offer.
By December, we’re back to the dry season. Santa Teresa can be pretty busy by this time of year, but you’re more likely to enjoy beach weather.
What to Pack for Your Trip to Santa Teresa

Pack light; bring breathable clothes, swimsuits, sandals, sunglasses, a hat, and sun protection.
